What it
usually means.

Food freezing in the fresh-food compartment means either that too much cold is arriving or that the appliance believes the compartment is warmer than it is. The first is usually a damper stuck open; the second is a sensor. Where in the compartment things freeze is the quickest way to tell them apart — freezing only near the vent is a distribution problem, freezing everywhere is a control problem.

Answer these first

01

Does food freeze everywhere, or only near the vent at the back?

02

What is the fresh-food setting, and has it been changed?

03

Is the compartment very empty or very full?

04

Is the freezer behaving normally?

05

Are items sitting directly in front of the cold-air vent?

Check these
before you book.

Refrigerator freezing food: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Check the setting before anything else.

02

Move food away from the vent at the back of the compartment.

03

Note whether freezing is local to the vent or general.

Also worth checking

  • Put a glass of water in the middle of the compartment overnight and see whether it freezes.
  • Note whether the freezer is behaving normally.

How soon does it need a visit?

Not urgent, though it spoils fresh food steadily. Raising the setting a little usually buys time until a visit.

5 things refrigerator freezing food turns out to be, from setting too cold to thermistor reading warm.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

    Setting too cold

Worth ruling out first; knobs and touch panels are both easy to change by accident.

  2. 02 no repair

    Food sitting in the airflow

Items directly in front of the vent freeze while the rest of the compartment is fine.

  3. 03 no repair

    A nearly empty compartment

An empty cabinet has little thermal mass and overshoots far more easily than a full one.

  4. 04 low to moderate

    Damper stuck open

Cold that should be metered arrives continuously, and the whole compartment runs too cold.

  5. 05 moderate

    Thermistor reading warm

The control keeps calling for cooling that is not needed, and every part of the system does as it is told.

Questions about
refrigerator freezing food.

What temperature should the fresh-food side be?
The FDA recommends keeping the refrigerator at or below 40°F, and most owners set it a few degrees lower for a margin. Settings close to 32°F start to freeze produce with a high water content, such as lettuce and cucumbers.
It started freezing food after a power outage. Why?
Some models return to their default settings after a power interruption, and the default can be colder than what you had chosen. Check the setting first; a control that keeps reverting on its own is worth mentioning when you book.
Is food that froze in the fridge still safe?
Freezing does not make food unsafe; it damages texture. Lettuce, herbs and soft fruit turn limp once they thaw, while most meats, cheeses and cooked dishes come through fine.
Does this get worse in cold weather?
It can. A refrigerator in a garage or an unheated room runs less often, and on some designs the fresh-food side then drifts colder. If the problem appeared as the weather turned and the unit is not in a heated room, the location may be the whole answer.
