What it
usually means.

A refrigerator handles water in three separate systems, and a leak belongs to exactly one of them. Defrost meltwater runs to a drain and then to a pan. Supply water runs to the ice maker and the dispenser. Condensate forms wherever warm air meets cold surfaces. Water at the front of the appliance, water underneath it and water inside it are three different problems, and telling them apart before the visit saves most of the diagnosis.

Gloved hands working on a water inlet valve and its plastic supply line at the lower back of a refrigerator. The 5 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Is the water at the front, underneath, or inside the compartment?

02

Is it clear and cold, or does it have ice in it?

03

Does it appear continuously, or in an episode every several hours?

04

Is there an ice maker or a water dispenser plumbed in?

05

Is there ice building up in the bottom of the freezer, under the drawer or the bottom shelf?

Refrigerator leaking water on the floor: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Note exactly where the water appears and tell us when you call.

02

Pull out the bottom freezer drawer and look for a sheet of ice underneath it.

03

If a water filter was changed recently, check it is seated and locked.

Also worth checking

  • Find the water shut-off for the refrigerator and make sure you can reach it.
  • Wipe the floor dry and time how long it takes to return.

How soon does it need a visit?

Not a food-safety problem, but a persistent leak under a refrigerator will damage flooring and subfloor. If the water is coming from the supply rather than from defrost, close the shut-off valve until the visit.

5 things refrigerator leaking water on the floor turns out to be, from filter head or a filter not seated to water line at the door hinge.

The cost guide
  1. 01 lowest

Filter head or a filter not seated

A filter changed recently and not locked home leaks at the head, and it is worth checking before a visit is booked.

  2. 02 low

    Blocked defrost drain

The most common leak by far. Meltwater that cannot reach the drain freezes into a sheet under the freezer floor and then spills forward onto the kitchen floor. The tell is ice under the bottom drawer.

  3. 03 low

    Cracked or overflowing drain pan

The pan under the unit collects meltwater to evaporate it. A cracked pan leaks directly underneath, with no ice involved.

  4. 04 low to moderate

Water supply line or inlet valve

Supply water leaks steadily rather than in episodes, and the puddle keeps returning within minutes of being wiped up.

  5. 05 moderate

Water line at the door hinge

On French door and side-by-side layouts the line crosses the hinge and flexes every time the door opens. A seep there shows at the front of the appliance rather than beneath it.

Questions about
refrigerator leaking water on the floor.

Does a leak mean the refrigerator is about to stop cooling?
Usually not. A blocked drain or a supply leak has nothing to do with the refrigeration, and the food stays cold throughout. The exception is ice growing under the freezer floor, which can eventually restrict the airflow, so a leak that comes with frost is worth booking sooner.
Why does the puddle show up only every few days?
Episodic leaks follow the defrost cycle. Meltwater spills each time the blocked drain overflows, so the puddle appears after a defrost and then dries up. Note the time of day you find it, because that pattern points away from the water supply.
The leak started right after the refrigerator was installed. Why?
A new installation is where supply leaks cluster: a fitting not fully tightened, a line pinched as the unit was pushed back, or a filter that was never locked in. With the water on, feel the connection at the back; a damp fitting is usually the answer. Plastic supply lines are more prone to this than braided ones.
Should I check the floor underneath?
Yes, if the leak has gone on for a while. Water under the unit sits on the subfloor out of sight, so pull the refrigerator out, dry the area fully and look for soft or discolored flooring. Laminate and hardwood swell quickly, and photos taken now are useful later.
