GE refrigerators,
specifically.

GE is the volume line of GE Appliances, and its refrigerators run from coin-dial top-freezer models to French-door units with touch controls, filtered dispensers and Wi-Fi. That spread matters more than the badge: two GE refrigerators can share almost nothing at the control level, so the model number shapes the visit before the symptom does.

The GE lineup

What is particular
to GE.

GE sells top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side and French-door refrigerators plus compact models. Knowing which family the unit is from tells the technician whether they are dealing with a mechanical dial or an electronic control board before the visit.

One dial runs both compartments on top-freezers

On GE top-freezer models a single dial sets the whole appliance, and turning it to 0 stops cooling in the fresh food and freezer sections while the power stays on. A top-freezer that is warm everywhere with the light still working is first checked at that dial, then at the shared cooling system behind it.

Adaptive defrost can look like a unit that never stops

GE's bottom-freezer manual treats a compressor that keeps running during door openings as normal: adaptive defrost holds it on, and the unit cycles off once the doors stay shut for about two hours. A GE that runs constantly while holding temperature is not, by itself, a sign of trouble.

The filter is part of the water circuit

On GE models that take the XWFE cartridge, the dispenser and ice maker will not run without either a filter or the bypass plug in place, and select models read the cartridge by RFID to watch for leaks and filter life. An indicator that stays red after a change often means the wrong cartridge rather than a failed valve.

Warmth at the front edge is designed in

GE runs warm liquid around the front edge of the freezer so moisture does not form on the outside, and it notes that heat is expelled under the refrigerator. A warm divider or warm air at the floor is expected; sweating on the cabinet face is where the question starts.

Parts

Water filters are matched to the model: an XWFE-equipped GE expects an XWFE cartridge, not the older XWF. Confirming the exact cartridge from the model number avoids a return trip on dispenser and ice calls.

Repair or replace

Control, fan, defrost and dispenser repairs on a GE are usually worth doing at any age. Sealed-system work on an older basic top-freezer is the case where replacement deserves a serious look.

Questions about
GE refrigerators.

My GE refrigerator runs all the time, but the food is cold. Is something wrong?
Not necessarily. GE's adaptive defrost keeps the compressor running while doors are being opened, and the unit cycles off after the doors have stayed closed for about two hours. If temperatures are holding, long run times on their own are normal; book a visit if the food starts warming.
I changed the water filter and now neither the dispenser nor the ice maker works.
On XWFE models the water system will not run without a correctly seated filter or the bypass plug, and some models read the cartridge by RFID. Check that the cartridge is an XWFE, not an XWF, and that it has turned fully into place. If it has and there is still no water, the valve or line needs a look.
The strip between my GE's fridge and freezer feels warm. Is that a leak?
No. GE circulates warm liquid around the front edge of the freezer to stop condensation forming on the outside. It only becomes a service question if the cabinet face is sweating or the door gasket no longer seals.
My GE top-freezer is warm in both sections but the light is on. Where do I start?
Check the dial: on these models setting it to 0 stops cooling in both compartments without cutting power. Also allow about 30 minutes in case the unit is in its defrost cycle. If neither explains it, the problem is in the single shared cooling system and needs a visit.
