What Coral Gables does

Coral Gables grew out of the Merrick family's citrus and vegetable plantation west of Coconut Grove, and George Merrick had the whole city mapped on paper before the first lots sold in 1921.

Most of the original city went up in a rush between 1921 and 1926, much of it in Mediterranean Revival style, and it incorporated in 1925.

Local limestone known as coral rock was quarried on site and laid by Bahamian masons, and the main quarry pit was turned into the Venetian Pool.

The city keeps its own architectural review, so exterior changes to houses go before a Board of Architects and many properties are locally designated historic.
