What the compressor and sealed system repair
involves.

The sealed system is the compressor, the condenser, the evaporator and the refrigerant that moves between them. It is the one part of a refrigerator that cannot be opened casually: the work is regulated, the charge is measured rather than guessed, and a leak has to be found before anything is added. It is also the repair where the answer is sometimes no — on an older freestanding unit the arithmetic frequently favors replacement, and you should be told that rather than sold a compressor.

How the visit goes

Sealed system and compressor,
step by step.

Say plainly when the repair costs more than the appliance is worth in that opening.

01

Confirm the failure really is the sealed system, because a fan, a defrost cycle or a damper produces the same complaint for a fraction of the cost.

02

Find the leak before adding anything. Refrigerant that went somewhere once will go there again.

03

Recover, repair, evacuate and weigh in a measured charge.

04

Run the appliance long enough to confirm it holds, rather than long enough to look like it does.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Compressors in Tampa Bay garage and lanai units work longer hours against warm, damp air, and when an upper-floor kitchen needs sealed-system work, the repair-or-replace decision can shift because hauling a unit up stairs is its own job.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Sealed-system work in Orlando's planned neighborhoods often involves models of similar age installed together, so the question of repairing versus replacing an aging freestanding unit tends to come up on more than one street at once.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

For built-in, panel-ready refrigeration in Miami high-rises, a compressor or refrigerant repair frequently makes more sense than replacement, since swapping a built-in means cabinetry work plus booking the freight elevator.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

In New York, a compressor or leak repair on a narrow column or undercounter unit is often weighed against how hard any replacement would be to bring in, which tends to favor fixing the existing sealed system.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston garage units push their compressors hard through humid summers as the condenser struggles to shed heat into hot air, so the technician confirms a true sealed-system failure rather than a healthy system overwhelmed by the room.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Basement chest freezers around Chicagoland can run for many years on the original compressor, and when one finally fails, the arithmetic of a sealed-system repair on a simple freestanding freezer often points toward replacement instead.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Outdoor undercounter refrigerators by Los Angeles pools ask a lot of a small compressor, and sealed-system diagnosis there separates a genuine leak or worn compressor from a condenser that simply cannot shed heat outdoors.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Salt air along the San Diego shoreline can corrode condenser tubing on outdoor units over time, and a leak found there is something the technician locates and repairs before any refrigerant is added.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

A counter-depth refrigerator packed tightly into an old San Francisco kitchen can run its compressor hot for years, so sealed-system work there often includes checking whether poor ventilation contributed to the failure.

Questions about
the compressor and sealed system repair.

Is it worth replacing a compressor?
On a built-in or a column, usually yes: the appliance is specified with the kitchen and a replacement means cabinetry work. On a ten-year-old freestanding unit, usually not. The type decides this far more than the age does.
Can you just top up the refrigerant?
No. A sealed system does not consume refrigerant, so a low charge means a leak. Adding gas without finding the leak buys a few months and wastes the visit.
How long does a sealed-system repair take?
Longer than any other job on the list, and often two visits: the leak is located and the part ordered first, then the circuit is opened, repaired, evacuated and charged. After the charge the appliance has to run for hours before anyone can say it is holding. Expect to be without that refrigerator for a day or more.
What happens to the food while the system is open?
It has to go somewhere cold, because the cabinet warms up for as long as the circuit is open. A cooler with ice or a spare refrigerator in the garage covers most households. On a column pair only the failed column needs emptying, since its neighbor keeps running.
