What Malibu does

Malibu is a long, narrow coastal city strung along Pacific Coast Highway between the Santa Monica Mountains and the ocean, and it incorporated in 1991.

Much of its coast was held as one private ranch by the Rindge family until the coast highway was opened through it, and most building along the shore came after.

Malibu Colony began in the late 1920s as a row of narrow beach lots leased to film stars and is now a gated community.

The Palisades Fire of January 2025 destroyed homes in parts of Malibu, and rebuilding is moving through the city's permit process.
