Refrigerator
repair cost,
band by band.

Bands rather than prices, because the same repair costs differently on a freestanding unit and on a built-in. What does not change is the order — the cheap causes are also the common ones — or the rule that decides repair against replace.

We do not quote a price before a technician has seen the appliance.

Everything on this page is a band, not a quote. The same symptom can be a five-minute door adjustment or a sealed-system repair, and which one it is cannot be established over the phone — anyone who names a firm figure before looking is either guessing or quoting the expensive answer. What you are told before any work starts is the actual price of the actual repair, and you decide then.

The bands, job by job

Ask what the diagnostic visit costs and whether it is credited against the repair.

Get the answer before the visit rather than after it.

Expect a price for the specific repair once the problem is established, and expect it before any work is approved.

Expect to be told plainly when the appliance is not worth repairing.

That answer is also part of the job.

What a repair
usually costs.

A useful rule: weigh the repair against what the appliance would cost to replace in the same opening. On a freestanding unit that is a straightforward comparison. On a built-in or a column it is not, because the replacement has to match the cabinetry, and that is why sealed-system work on those types is still normally worth doing.

RepairRelative costNotes
Door gasket or alignment lowest Often the cheapest job on the list, and frequently the real cause of a much more expensive-sounding symptom.
Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor low The usual answer when frost has built up and the fresh-food side has drifted warm.
Evaporator or condenser fan low Common, quick, and the reason a freezer can be cold while the refrigerator is not.
Water inlet valve or line low Covers most no-water and no-ice calls once the filter and the shut-off have been ruled out.
Defrost drain clearing low The sheet of ice under the bottom drawer, before it becomes water on the kitchen floor.
Ice maker assembly moderate Replaced as a module rather than rebuilt on nearly every current design.
Control board moderate Priced against the model, and on built-in units the part is the majority of the cost.
Compressor or sealed system highest The one repair where the decision is genuinely open, and where the type of appliance decides it.
Maintenance visit lowest Not a repair. The visit that prevents the largest share of the ones above it.

What the diagnostic
visit covers.

The first visit decides what the repair actually is. The fee, and whether it is credited against the repair, is said when you book, before anyone comes out.

The diagnostic visit
01

Confirming what the appliance is actually doing, with temperatures measured in both compartments.

02

Checking the simple causes first: settings, door seals, the condenser and grille, clearances and the drain.

03

Testing the suspect components, such as fans, defrost parts, sensors, valves and controls, instead of replacing on a guess.

04

An explanation of what failed, what the repair involves and what it costs, or a plain statement that repairing it does not make sense.

What moves
the price.

Five things decide where in its band a repair lands. None of them is known for certain until a technician has seen the refrigerator.

The types

Type and access

Built-in and column units are repaired where they stand in the cabinetry, with trim, grilles and sometimes a custom panel removed and refitted, so the same job takes longer than it would on a model you can roll forward. Access is often the biggest difference between two bills for the same part.

The part, and whether it is on hand

A fan motor or a defrost sensor sits at the low end, while a control board or an ice maker module moves the job up a band. A part carried on the van can be fitted the same day; one ordered for the model adds a return trip.

Sealed-system work

Anything that opens the refrigerant circuit is the top band on its own. The leak must be traced, the system recovered, repaired, evacuated and charged by weight, and then proved over hours of running. No other refrigerator repair involves as much time or equipment.

Make and parts availability

Parts for widely sold makes are easy to source and priced to match. Premium and imported makes often carry costlier parts with longer lead times, and a discontinued part can settle the repair-or-replace question by itself.

How many visits it takes

A repair completed on the diagnostic visit costs less than one that needs a second trip for an ordered part. Giving the model number when you book is the simplest way to improve the odds of a single visit.

Questions about
the price.

What does the diagnostic visit cost?
It is quoted when you book, so you know the figure before anyone arrives. You also hear then whether that amount counts toward the repair, rather than finding out from the invoice.
Why are costs shown as bands instead of prices?
Because a band is the most anyone can honestly say without seeing the appliance. The same complaint can turn out to be a door adjustment or a compressor, and the model changes what the part costs. The bands show where each job sits against the others.
Do I have to go ahead with the repair after the diagnosis?
No. You are given the price of the specific repair first and decide then. Declining it leaves nothing further to pay beyond the visit itself.
Can the price change once the work starts?
The repair is priced once the diagnosis pins the problem down, and that is the figure you agree to. If opening the appliance reveals a second problem, you are told and asked before anything is added.
