What the defrost drain and leak repair
involves.

A refrigerator handles defrost meltwater, supply water and condensate through three systems that have nothing to do with each other. Where the water appears is what tells them apart: a sheet of ice under the bottom drawer and an episode every few hours is defrost; a steady puddle that returns within minutes is supply; beads on the walls in a humid room are condensate and often not a problem at all. Diagnosing the wrong one wastes the visit.

How the visit goes

Drains and leaks,
step by step.

Inspect the evaporation pan underneath, which is where a cracked pan leaks with no ice involved.

01

Ask where the water is, whether it has ice in it, and whether it returns steadily or in episodes.

02

Pull the bottom drawer and look for the sheet of ice that a blocked drain leaves.

03

Clear the drain properly and check why it froze, rather than only that it was blocked.

04

Inspect the evaporation pan underneath, which is where a cracked pan leaks with no ice involved.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Humid air around a garage or lanai unit tends to bead on cabinet walls and door edges, which is condensate rather than a leak, and the technician confirms that before touching the defrost drain or the supply line.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Left unnoticed in an unoccupied house, a leak can run for weeks, so the job starts by identifying which of the three water systems it came from and then checking the floor and cabinetry beneath for lasting damage.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

Water escaping a refrigerator in a tower can reach the apartment below, so a slow leak hidden by cabinet paneling matters more; the drain pan and defrost channel are cleared and the supply connection checked after long absences.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Tight undercounter installations leave no way to see water pooling behind or beneath, and a blocked defrost drain can soak the cabinetry before anyone notices; the unit is pulled only as far as needed to trace it.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Summer humidity in a garage adds meltwater and sweat that can overflow the drain pan, while a winter cold spell can freeze the defrost drain outright, and knowing which season produced the puddle decides the repair.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Heavy frost in a basement freezer can dump meltwater onto a concrete floor, and a porch unit may see its drain freeze solid in winter; the drain is cleared and the reason ice formed there is tracked down.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Poolside undercounter refrigerators tend to pick up leaves and debris that clog their drains, and the resulting overflow often looks like a supply leak, so cleaning the drain path usually settles it.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Marine air along the coast can corrode a drain pan or its bracket on an outdoor refrigerator until it weeps, whereas a built-in in a newer inland home more often shows a frozen drain under the bottom drawer.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Tucked into an old cabinet opening, a counter-depth unit can sit on original flooring that hides a slow leak for a long time, so the drain tube, pan and water connection are checked before anything is replaced.

Questions about
the defrost drain and leak repair.

Why is there ice under the bottom drawer?
Because the defrost drain has blocked and meltwater is freezing where it stands instead of reaching the pan. When that sheet gets thick enough it spills forward onto the floor.
Is condensation inside a problem?
Often not. A humid room, a door opened frequently and uncovered liquids all produce it, and on a glass-door wine cabinet it is expected rather than wrong.
How long does clearing a blocked drain take?
Usually well within one visit. The ice around the opening is melted first, then the line is flushed and checked through to the pan. If the drain keeps refreezing, the heater or clip that protects it is examined while the rear panel is still off.
Is it fine to carry on using it in the meantime?
Yes, provided it still cools: empty the ice from under the drawer and lay a towel down. Defrost water harms the floor over time rather than the appliance. A steady flow of clean water is different, and there you should close the refrigerator’s water valve.
