Kenmore refrigerators,
specifically.

Kenmore refrigeration was never built by Kenmore. For decades the first three digits of the model number named the maker's platform, and Sears published different error-code tables for 106, 111, 253 and 795 models because each speaks a different code language. Newer Kenmore models use letter model numbers instead, so reading the tag is the first step on every visit.

The Kenmore lineup

What is particular
to Kenmore.

The badge has covered Kenmore and Kenmore Elite French door, side-by-side, bottom-freezer and top-freezer models built on several platforms. On a visit the platform matters more than the badge, because controls, codes and parts all follow it.

The prefix picks the manual

Sears organized its Kenmore refrigerator codes by model prefix, not by brand, and the owner documents point the same way: the service manual for Kenmore 795 models carries an LG Electronics circuit diagram, and a Kenmore 253 guide tells owners to use Frigidaire parts. Until the prefix is known, no code on the display can be interpreted.

Three code languages under one badge

A 795 model reports in pairs like Er FS or F dH on its temperature display, a 106 model shows a single letter such as d or C, and a 253 French door model shows OP, SH or SY EF. The same symptom can arrive in any of those forms depending on who built the unit.

Some codes only appear on request

On some Kenmore 111 bottom-freezer models the codes are read by entering a diagnostic mode, and on 111 top-freezer models an LED on the main control board blinks a count. A blank display on those units does not mean the control has nothing to report.

Newer models drop the prefix

Current Kenmore refrigerators are listed under letter model numbers such as KMR17MBKE, and the range now includes garage-ready top-freezer models. For those, the old three-digit rule does not apply and the model tag is read as it is.

Parts

Parts are looked up by the full Kenmore model number, which maps to the platform the unit was built on. Mechanical parts are usually shared with that platform; Kenmore-specific trim and handles on discontinued models are the harder items to find.

Repair or replace

Depends on the platform and age more than the badge. A board, fan, sensor or defrost repair is normally worthwhile; when an older unit needs compressor or refrigerant work, replacement is often the better answer.

Questions about
Kenmore refrigerators.

How do I find out who made my Kenmore refrigerator?
Start with the model number printed on the label inside the refrigerator. On older units the first three digits identify the platform; for example, the service manual for 795 models carries an LG Electronics circuit diagram, and a 253 guide refers owners to Frigidaire parts. Newer Kenmore models use letter model numbers instead.
My Kenmore 795 shows 'Er' and two letters. What does that mean?
On 795 models these are error codes shown on the temperature display. Er FS and Er rS point at the freezer and refrigerator sensors, Er FF at the evaporator fan, and F dH means the defrost sensor did not warm up during defrost. Some of these codes stop cooling, so it is worth booking a visit promptly.
My Kenmore Elite displays OFF and is not cooling. Is it broken?
On some Kenmore Elite 795 models, OFF on the control panel means Demo Mode, which disables cooling for a store floor. The use & care guide gives the button combination to turn it off; on some 106 models the equivalent message is COOLING OFF.
Why does my Kenmore show no error code even though it is warm?
Some Kenmore models only show codes in a diagnostic mode, or flash them on an LED on the main control board. A technician reads those during the visit, which is one reason the model number is needed before anything else.
