What Forest Hills does
to a refrigerator.
Forest Hills is a central Queens neighborhood along Queens Boulevard, with a Long Island Rail Road station at Station Square on its south side.
Its best-known section, Forest Hills Gardens, was founded in 1909 and designed by Grosvenor Atterbury and Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. as a planned garden community of Tudor-style houses on curving private streets.
Inside the Gardens a private corporation maintains the streets and parks and must approve any exterior change to a house.
Outside it, the neighborhood is dominated by prewar and postwar apartment buildings along and near Queens Boulevard, many of them co-ops.
All of New York MetroMixed housing
A block that mixes decades of construction also mixes ventilation standards: a unit installed under an older code can vent adequately by the rule of its day and still run marginally by current appliance clearances, which shows up as nuisance overheating that a newer install two doors down never sees.
Family houses
A full family refrigerator is opened dozens of times a day and loaded to the back of every shelf. Door seals, blocked vents and a defrost drain that never gets a chance to clear account for most of what goes wrong, and all three are cheap when caught early.
Small kitchens
A compact unit is more likely to be a single evaporator serving both compartments through one shared air path, so a complaint in the fresh-food side and a complaint in the freezer often trace back to the same blocked damper rather than two separate problems.
