What Park Slope does

Park Slope climbs the western edge of Prospect Park, with its streets descending from Prospect Park West toward the Gowanus area.

The land stayed largely rural until the park was built in the 1860s and 1870s, and most of its row houses went up in the last decades of the nineteenth century.

Blocks near the park carry brownstone and limestone row houses and freestanding mansions, while the lower slope has more modest row houses and multi-family flats.

Much of the upper slope is a landmark district, so front facades, stoops and windows are held to their historic appearance.
