What Tribeca does

Tribeca, a name coined in the 1970s for the Triangle Below Canal Street, lies on the west side of Lower Manhattan near the Hudson River.

In the nineteenth century it was a wholesale market district, and its store-and-loft buildings and warehouses served the produce, butter, egg and cheese trade near the old Washington Market.

Many of those buildings still show cast-iron piers, raised loading platforms and wide freight openings at street level.

Artists began moving into the lofts in the 1970s, and most of the district has since been converted to homes with large open floors in buildings never designed as apartments.

Tower living
