What Brooklyn Heights does
to a refrigerator.

Brooklyn Heights sits on a bluff above the East River facing Lower Manhattan, and in 1965 it became the first historic district designated in New York City.

Steam ferry service across the river in the early nineteenth century turned it into one of the first commuter suburbs, and its streets filled with row houses soon after.

The housing is largely Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival and Italianate row houses, with former carriage houses tucked along small mews.

The Brooklyn Heights Promenade runs along the edge of the bluff on a deck built over the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

Older housing stock

An older building rarely has a cabinet opening that matches a current appliance, so what is installed is what fitted: narrow, shallow, sometimes a generation old and still working. Parts availability and access, not age, are what decide whether a repair goes ahead.

Small kitchens

There is no space behind the appliance, so there is no margin. A rug pushed against the grille, a toe kick fitted flush, or a few years of dust are enough to turn a healthy unit into one that runs continuously and still drifts warm. It is the cheapest problem in this trade and the most commonly missed.

Mixed housing

The icemaker line often reveals a house's age before the appliance does — older copper runs develop pinhole leaks that a newer plastic line simply does not, regardless of which refrigerator happens to be connected to it.
