What is particular
to Whirlpool.

The line runs from French door and side-by-side models down to top- and bottom-freezer refrigerators, with counter-depth versions of several. They are all freestanding, so the unit can be rolled out, which makes access much simpler than on built-in brands.

Ice made in the door

On many Whirlpool French door models the ice maker and its bin are built into the left-hand refrigerator door, not the freezer drawer. An ice complaint on these units is traced at that door compartment, so a freezer that holds temperature perfectly tells you little about it.

The water filter sits in the ceiling

The filter on these French door models lives in the right-hand side of the refrigerator ceiling, and Whirlpool states that the dispenser will not run if the cartridge is not locked into its housing. A dispenser that went dry right after a filter change is usually a seating problem, not a failed valve.

A zone that can be either

Some models carry a Freezer-to-Fridge Zone with a wide range of settings. Before anyone chases a cooling problem in that compartment, the setting it was left on has to be read, because a drawer running at refrigerator temperature may simply be doing what it was told.

Condenser behind the base grille

The condenser is reached from the front, behind the base grille. Whirlpool calls routine cleaning unnecessary in a normal kitchen but asks for it every six months in dusty homes or homes with pets, which is exactly where units that run constantly tend to turn up.

Parts

Parts for current Whirlpool freestanding models are generally easy to source because the platform is shared across the family. We read the full model number from the tag inside the fresh-food compartment before ordering, since door-mounted ice systems differ from model to model.

Repair or replace

A real question on older units. Dispenser, ice maker, filter-housing and defrost repairs are almost always worth doing; a sealed-system repair on an older top-freezer model is where replacement becomes the sensible answer.

My Whirlpool water dispenser stopped working right after I changed the filter. Is something broken?
Usually not. Whirlpool's own manual says the dispenser will not operate if the filter is not correctly locked into its housing. Take the cartridge out and seat it again until it locks before assuming the valve or dispenser has failed.
Where is the ice maker on a Whirlpool French door refrigerator?
On many current models it is on the left-hand refrigerator door, with the ice bin in the same compartment. That is where an ice problem gets diagnosed, even when the freezer drawer below is holding temperature.
Does a Whirlpool refrigerator need its condenser cleaned?
Whirlpool says not in a normal kitchen, but in a dusty home or one with pets it asks for cleaning every six months. The coil is behind the base grille at the front, so it can be reached without pulling the unit out.
One compartment on my Whirlpool is warmer than the rest. Is it failing?
If it is the Freezer-to-Fridge Zone, check its setting first. That compartment can be set anywhere across a wide range, and it may simply have been switched to a refrigerator setting.
