What Sugar Land does
to a refrigerator.

Sugar Land grew from plantations on Oyster Creek in Fort Bend County and became a company town around the Imperial Sugar refinery in the early twentieth century.

After the company began selling off its land and houses in the late 1950s, the city incorporated in 1959 and grew into one of the largest suburbs of Houston.

Most of its housing sits in master-planned subdivisions from the 1970s onward, many laid out around lakes and golf courses under homeowner associations.

The flat, low land lies near the Brazos River, and levees have protected it since the sugar company built its first one in 1913.

Newer developments

Builder-grade kitchens are equipped to a construction budget rather than an owner's own choice, so what is installed is usually the base trim level of its line, with the shorter service life and lighter-duty components that implies — worth checking before assuming a young appliance still has years left in it.

Family houses

A household refrigerator is opened more often than any other appliance in the house and loaded until the vents are covered. Door seals, blocked airflow and a drain that never gets to clear account for most of it — cheap problems, all of them, and all cheaper still when caught early.

A second refrigerator

The second unit is the one with the least supervision and the worst conditions: a garage, a basement, a back porch. It is also the one holding whatever was bought in bulk, which is why its problems are discovered by weight rather than by temperature.
