The Woodlands is a planned community north of Houston along Interstate 45, begun by Mitchell Energy and Development in the early 1970s, with its first homes sold in 1974.

It was laid out as a series of villages with houses set back into preserved pine forest, so many streets and lots are heavily wooded.

It is not an incorporated city, and The Woodlands Township together with a group of utility districts provides many of its local services.

Housing runs from 1970s and 1980s houses in the earliest villages to much newer construction in the later ones.
