What Highland Park does
to a refrigerator.

Its housing covers a wide span, from early twentieth-century houses to a notable stock of mid-century modern homes.

The Ravinia Festival grounds lie inside the city, and through its summer season the surrounding streets are busy and parking is restricted.

Bluff-side properties face lake weather directly, and winter here means a sustained freeze rather than a cold snap.

All of Chicago

On a lake

Moist air off the lake condenses on anything cold, so sweating doors, wet crisper drawers and frost that builds faster than it should are more often about humidity and door seals here than about the sealed system.

Older housing stock

What is installed here was chosen by a doorway, a stair turn and a cabinet run that were all fixed generations ago. That produces appliances no showroom would recommend and every technician recognizes: narrow, shallow, older than they look, and entirely repairable as long as the part still exists.

Mixed housing

Neighboring kitchens can be thirty years apart, and so can the answer. Whether a repair is worth doing is decided by what kind of refrigerator it is far more reliably than by how old it is.
