Gaggenau refrigerators,
specifically.

Gaggenau refrigeration is the Vario cooling line: fully integrated columns for fresh food, freezing and wine, designed to be planned into an architectural kitchen and combined side by side. Most service questions turn on how the columns were installed next to each other and next to the cabinetry.

The Gaggenau lineup

What is particular
to Gaggenau.

The 400 series (refrigerator, freezer and wine columns, plus a bottom-freezer unit) and the 200 series make up the range. Combinations are common, so a visit starts by identifying which column has the problem and how the combination was joined.

A heater between the columns

When two Vario columns stand close together, Gaggenau requires an extra side heating element between them to stop condensation. Moisture or ice forming in the joint between two columns usually traces back to that element or to how the gap was set.

Held in the niche by a bracket

Vario columns are secured in their niche only by an anti-tilt bracket at the top back and at the side at the bottom. The niche itself has to be stable, and a column that has shifted puts its door out of line with the panel.

Push-to-open or pull-to-open

The door-opening assist runs either as push-to-open for handleless fronts or pull-to-open with a handle. In Sabbath (rest) mode the door can only be opened with a handle, which surprises owners of handleless kitchens.

A 115-degree door that can be pinned

The door opens to 115 degrees, and a supplied pin limits it to 90 where it would hit neighboring cabinetry. Chipped panels or a door striking a handle usually mean that limit was never set.

Parts

Panels, handles and trims are made to order for the kitchen and are the slow part of any repair. Mechanical parts are ordered per column, by the model number on its rating plate.

Repair or replace

Almost always a repair. A Vario column is planned into a niche and paired with its neighbors, so replacing one affects the whole wall of cabinetry.

Questions about
Gaggenau refrigerators.

Moisture forms between my two Gaggenau columns. What causes it?
Gaggenau requires an extra side heating element when columns stand close together, to prevent condensation in the joint. If the element is missing, has failed, or the gap does not match the planning guidance, moisture collects there.
My handleless Gaggenau door will not open with a push. Is it broken?
Check whether rest (Sabbath) mode is on. In that mode the door can only be opened with a handle. Outside it, the push-to-open assist has to be selected and working.
The door hits the cabinet next to it. What can be done?
The door opens to 115 degrees, and Gaggenau supplies a pin to restrict it to 90 degrees. A spacer or a change to the neighboring cabinetry are the other options the planning guide lists.
Is one failed column a sign the others will follow?
No. Each Vario column is a complete appliance with its own controls and cooling. A problem in one does not spread to the columns beside it, although a failed heater between them can affect both.
