Café refrigerators,
specifically.

Café is the design-led line of GE Appliances: French-door, four-door, counter-depth and 42- and 48-inch built-in side-by-side refrigerators, sold with interchangeable handle hardware and finishes such as matte and Platinum Glass. On a service call, what sets a Café apart is where its ice lives, how its dispenser senses a glass, and which cleaners its finish will tolerate.

The Café lineup

What is particular
to Café.

The range covers four-door and three-door bottom-freezer models (CVE, CXE, CQE), counter-depth French-door models (CYE, CWE), AutoFill-pitcher models (CJE) and built-in 42- and 48-inch side-by-sides (CSB). The built-ins install differently from the freestanding doors, so the model prefix matters before the visit.

The ice maker is in the left door

On the CVE, CXE and CQE bottom-freezer models the ice maker and bin sit on the door, reached through an ice box door on the inside of the left door. An ice complaint on these models is traced at the door, not in the freezer drawer below.

Hands-free AutoFill works by sensors

The dispenser can fill a container on its own, and Café states it works best at 60 to 100 psi of household water pressure. Handles, straws or garnishes on the rim can make it overfill or stop short, and the fill can time out, so an erratic fill is checked against the container and pressure before the dispenser itself.

Some models dispense hot water too

Certain counter-depth Café models add an adjustable hot water dispenser that can be preheated by voice or from a phone. That gives the door a heated water function to diagnose alongside the chilled one.

Finish and hardware set the care rules

On fingerprint-resistant, black stainless, slate, painted and glass finishes Café says not to use stainless steel cleaners on the doors. Handle hardware comes as optional kits in several finishes, so a damaged handle is replaced by kit and finish, not just by model.

Parts

Handles are ordered as finish-specific hardware kits, separate from the mechanical parts of the refrigerator. Confirm both the model number and the hardware finish before ordering anything cosmetic.

Repair or replace

A Café is usually bought for its look and its fit in the kitchen, so repairs to controls, dispensers, ice makers and fans are almost always the better answer. A sealed-system failure on an older unit is the one case to weigh carefully.

Questions about
Café refrigerators.

My Café AutoFill stops early or overfills. Is the dispenser failing?
Often not. AutoFill reads the container with sensors, and Café notes that handles, straws or garnishes on the rim can cause overfilling or uneven fills, and that it works best with 60 to 100 psi of water pressure. Try a plain container with the sensors wiped clean; if it still misbehaves, book a visit.
Where is the ice maker on my Café French-door refrigerator?
On the CVE, CXE and CQE models it is in the left door, behind an ice box door on the inside of that door, rather than in the freezer. Ice problems on these models are diagnosed at the door.
Can I use stainless steel cleaner on my matte or Platinum Glass Café?
No. For fingerprint-resistant, black stainless, slate, painted and glass finishes, Café's manual says not to use stainless steel cleaners on the doors; use mild detergent in warm water and a soft cloth. The wrong cleaner can damage the finish.
