KitchenAid refrigerators,
specifically.

KitchenAid sells two different kinds of refrigerator under one name: freestanding French door, four-door and side-by-side models, and built-in units that go into cabinetry flush, overlay or proud. The built-ins are serviced from the front through a top grille, and on several freestanding models the fresh-food and freezer sections cool on their own systems.

The KitchenAid lineup

What is particular
to KitchenAid.

Freestanding French door, four-door and side-by-side models make up most of the line; the built-in range includes 42-inch bottom-mount and 48-inch side-by-side units. Which of the two a unit is decides the whole visit, because built-ins are serviced in place from the front.

A power switch behind the top grille

KitchenAid built-in units have a real power switch hidden behind the top grille, and the manual asks owners to switch it off for cleaning. A built-in that is completely dark after a cleaning or a bulb change has very often just been left switched off.

Separate cooling on some freestanding models

KitchenAid describes independent cooling systems with specialized evaporators on some of its freestanding refrigerators. On those models a warm fresh-food section beside a cold freezer points at that section's own system, not at a shared duct, and the diagnosis starts there.

An over-temperature alarm with set limits

The built-in control raises an Over Temperature alarm when the refrigerator passes 48°F or the freezer passes 15°F, and a Master Alarm Reset silences it. An alarm that keeps coming back after a reset is real evidence that a compartment is not recovering.

Three door installation styles

Built-in doors can be installed flush, overlay or proud. The style changes how the doors and panels are aligned, and a door that is out of line with its cabinet presents as a seal, frost or warm-compartment complaint long before anyone calls it a door problem.

Parts

Mechanical parts for freestanding KitchenAid models are shared widely across the family and are usually easy to get. Built-in trim, grilles and door panels are the items most likely to need ordering.

Repair or replace

On a built-in KitchenAid, repair is almost always the answer, because the unit is part of the cabinetry. On an older freestanding model it is an ordinary appliance decision, and a sealed-system repair deserves a second look.

Questions about
KitchenAid refrigerators.

My built-in KitchenAid went completely dark after I cleaned it. What happened?
Check the power switch first. On KitchenAid built-ins it sits behind the top grille, the manual asks you to use it when cleaning, and it is easy to leave it off. Take the grille off, turn the switch back on and replace the grille.
Why does my KitchenAid display show 34°F and -5°F and not change?
That is Max Cool. While it is on, the display holds at 34°F in the refrigerator and -5°F in the freezer, and after 24 hours the unit returns to your previous settings. Nothing is wrong.
The Over Temperature alarm keeps sounding. Can I ignore it?
Not for long. It sounds when the refrigerator rises above 48°F or the freezer above 15°F. A reset silences it for the current event; if it keeps coming back, the compartment is not recovering, so book a visit before food is lost.
My built-in KitchenAid has no ice. Is the ice maker broken?
First confirm it has one. On some built-in models the ice maker is an accessory, so a unit may never have had one fitted. If it is fitted, check its on/off switch before assuming it has failed.
