True Residential refrigerators,
specifically.

True Residential, now sold under the True Caliber name, is the home line of a commercial refrigeration maker based in Missouri. Its columns, side-by-sides and undercounter units are built around a lift-up top grill, stainless interiors and glass-door options that most residential brands do not offer, and that commercial layout decides how a visit goes.

The True Residential lineup

What is particular
to True Residential.

The range covers columns (refrigerator, freezer, wine, beverage), side-by-side and bottom-freezer units, 15- and 24-inch undercounter refrigerators, drawers, wine cabinets, beverage dispensers and clear ice machines. Column or full-size units are reached through the top grill; undercounter units are reached through a lower louver grill.

The machinery lives under a lift-up top grill

Columns and full-size units put the condensing unit behind a stainless grill that lifts from the front, the way a restaurant reach-in does. The technician works on the unit from the front while it stays in the cabinetry, and the first thing checked on a warm unit is the coil under that grill.

Undercounter units go outdoors, columns do not

True rates every undercounter model for outdoor use, including the glass-door versions, but its column manual states the columns are not suitable for outdoor use. A column installed in an outdoor kitchen has a different problem than an undercounter unit in the same spot.

Glass doors and humid air

Many True models ship with double-pane, low-E glass doors. True itself treats condensation on the cabinet as normal in humid climates or outdoor settings, so a call about water on the glass starts with where the unit stands and whether the door has been left open.

A display that names the problem

The column control shows notification alerts such as high temperature, defrost, communication error and service required, and it beeps when a door stays open more than five minutes. Writing down the exact alert before booking a visit saves the technician a step.

Parts

True runs its own parts lookup by serial number, and the serial label on a refrigerator sits on the left wall near the upper drawer. Having the model and serial number ready before the visit is the fastest way to get the right part ordered.

Repair or replace

Usually worth repairing. These are stainless, commercially built units installed into cabinetry, and most calls come down to a dirty coil, a door that is not closing fully, or a single component rather than the cabinet itself.

Questions about
True Residential refrigerators.

Can my True column go in an outdoor kitchen?
Not according to True's own column manual, which says the columns are not suitable for outdoor use. The undercounter models are a different story: True rates all of them for outdoor use. If a column is struggling outside, the location is the first thing to look at.
There is water on the glass door of my True undercounter unit. Is it broken?
Often not. True says condensation can form on the unit in humid climates or outdoors and treats that as normal, and a door left open adds to it. If the water keeps coming back with the door fully closed, or it forms inside the cabinet, book a visit so the door seal and leveling can be checked.
How often should the condenser on a True unit be checked?
True asks for a check every six months, or sooner if needed, and says not to put any filter material in front of the coil. On columns the coil is under the lift-up top grill.
My outdoor True undercounter unit runs all the time in summer. Why?
True's installation guide notes that where outdoor temperatures regularly exceed 95°F, the back of the cutout should be vented for best performance. A unit boxed in tightly in a hot outdoor island will run long; a technician can check the coil and the installation together.
