The line is built around top-freezer refrigerators, with bottom-freezer and side-by-side models above them. Most are mechanically simple, which keeps visits short and keeps parts easy to identify from the model tag.
Two controls, one airflow path
On Amana top-freezer models, temperature is set by two controls: a Temperature control at the top front of the fresh-food section and an Airflow control on the back wall of the freezer. The Airflow control decides how much cold air passes from the freezer to the refrigerator, so a warm fresh-food section above a cold freezer often starts with that setting.
Ice maker as a kit
Many Amana top-freezer models ship ice-maker-ready and take the ice maker as a separate kit. A unit with no ice may simply never have had one installed, and the kit connection is checked before anything else.
One shared air supply
Air circulates between the refrigerator and freezer sections on these models, so an odor in one travels to the other. A smell complaint is cleared by cleaning both sections, not just the one where it was noticed.
LED lights that are not a bulb swap
Some Amana models use LED lighting behind the Temperature control. When an LED does not come on with the door open, the manual sends owners to service rather than to a replacement bulb.
Parts
Amana shares parts, and even some owner manuals, with its sister brands, so common parts are rarely hard to find. The model and serial tag on the inside wall of the refrigerator compartment is what decides the exact part.
Repair or replace
Often a close call. An Amana costs less to replace than most refrigerators, so control, fan, defrost and ice-maker kit work is worth doing, but a compressor or leak on an aging unit usually tips the balance toward a new one.
