What Coconut Grove does

Coconut Grove was settled along Biscayne Bay in the 1880s, before the City of Miami existed, and was annexed into Miami in 1925.

Its best-known early house, the Barnacle of 1891, was set on wood pilings on a ridge above the water and later lifted so a new floor could be built beneath it.

Streets wind under a dense tree canopy, and a remnant of the original tropical hardwood hammock still stands between Main Highway and the bay.

Housing mixes early wood-frame cottages, including those of the Bahamian community in the West Grove, with walled bayfront estates and newer townhouses near the village center.
