Monogram refrigerators,
specifically.

Monogram is the built-in line of GE Appliances: full-size built-ins, panel-ready integrated columns from 18 to 36 inches, undercounter units and wine storage. Its built-ins take custom panels made by the cabinetmaker, and much of the routine access is at the front, so most service happens with the unit still in its opening.

The Monogram lineup

What is particular
to Monogram.

The range divides into full-size built-ins (side-by-side and French-door bottom-freezer), integrated column refrigerators and freezers, undercounter and compact refrigeration, and wine storage. A column and a full-size built-in are reached and adjusted differently, so the family matters more than the age.

The top grille hides the service points

On Monogram built-ins the grille panel at the top lifts to reach the condenser, and on the French-door built-in the water filter sits behind it too. Monogram asks for the condenser to be cleaned at least once a year where the kitchen is dusty or greasy, which makes a matted grille a common cause of a warm or long-running unit.

A door closer that thumps on purpose

The closing mechanism makes a slight thump as it passes its lever point at about 80 degrees, and Monogram lists that as normal. On columns, a door that will not close fully is often the cabinetry: Monogram's first check is whether the door panel has clearance to the cabinets around it.

French-door built-ins have an articulating mullion

The hinged strip on the left French door has to be folded against the door liner for the doors to close. If it has rotated out of position, the doors do not seal, and the result looks like frost or a warm compartment rather than a door problem.

Columns pause longer to defrost

Monogram columns can stop running for about 45 minutes while they defrost, and they also have a master switch and a Sabbath mode that can make them look dead. For odors, the manual points to the defrost water system beneath the unit and to an air filter that is due every six months.

Parts

Custom door panels come from the kitchen's cabinetmaker, not from Monogram, so panel damage is a cabinetry job. Filters differ by family: the French-door built-in uses MWF cartridges and the columns use XWF or XWFE.

Repair or replace

Rarely close. A Monogram built-in or column is fitted and paneled as part of the cabinetry, so replacing it means refitting the kitchen; repair, including sealed-system work, is normally the sensible choice.

Questions about
Monogram refrigerators.

My Monogram door makes a thump when it closes. Is the hinge failing?
Usually not. Monogram lists a slight thump as normal: the closing mechanism makes it as it passes its lever point at about 80 degrees. Closing the door more slowly softens it. A door that no longer pulls itself shut is a different matter and worth a visit.
Does a Monogram built-in have to come out of the cabinet for service?
Not for the routine work. The condenser on Monogram built-ins is reached by raising the grille panel at the top, and on the French-door built-in the water filter is behind the same grille. Deeper repairs are planned around the installation.
My Monogram column smells even though I cleaned it.
Monogram points to two things beyond the interior: an air filter in the upper left of some refrigerator columns, due every six months, and the defrost water system beneath the unit, which can need cleaning. Both are checked on an odor visit.
My Monogram column went quiet for a while and then started again. Should I worry?
Probably not. Columns can stop running for about 45 minutes during a defrost cycle. If it stays off longer, check the unit's master switch and that Sabbath mode is not on before booking a visit.
