What Noe Valley does

Noe Valley lies in a bowl south of Twin Peaks, on land that was part of the rancho granted to José de Jesús Noé in 1845.
The fire after the 1906 earthquake was stopped a few blocks to the north near 20th and Church Streets, so its late nineteenth-century houses survived and building went on after the disaster.
The housing is mostly Victorian and Edwardian row houses and flats on narrow lots, many sharing side walls with their neighbors.
Streets rise steeply toward Diamond Heights on the west, and the J Church streetcar and the 24th Street shopping strip are its main spines.
