What Marina does

The Marina District lies on the northern shore of San Francisco between the Presidio and Van Ness Avenue, largely on filled ground, including fill placed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition.

After the exposition closed, the area was built up mostly in the 1920s and 1930s with stucco houses and apartment buildings in Mediterranean and Art Deco styles.

In the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, soft soils and fill under the Marina amplified the shaking and liquefied, and several corner apartment buildings with ground-floor garages failed.

The Palace of Fine Arts, a survivor of the exposition, stands at its western edge beside the Presidio.
