Maytag refrigerators,
specifically.

Maytag refrigeration is freestanding and sold on durability: steel shelves, a heavy-duty door design and a PowerCold feature on most of the line. French door, side-by-side, top-freezer and bottom-freezer models share the family platform, but several Maytag features change how a symptom should be read.

The Maytag lineup

What is particular
to Maytag.

The Maytag line is entirely freestanding, from top- and bottom-freezer units up to French door and side-by-side models. The larger two carry most of the features that shape a visit: in-door or ceiling ice makers, Advanced Defrost and, on some models, dual evaporators.

PowerCold runs for a full day

PowerCold drives both compartments toward their coldest settings and stays on for 24 hours unless someone turns it off; changing the refrigerator set point cancels it. A Maytag that is running hard and cold the day after a big shop is often just doing PowerCold.

Two evaporators on some models

Some Maytag French door models give the refrigerator and freezer their own evaporators, with a valve that switches cooling between them. That valve makes rapid repetitive clicking, which Maytag describes as normal, so the sound alone is not a reason for a visit.

Defrost only when it is needed

Advanced Defrost monitors the freezer and runs the cycle only when it is needed, instead of on a fixed clock. When frost does build up on these models the defrost system has to be checked through its controls and sensors, not by waiting for a timer.

Ice made in the fresh-food ceiling

On one common layout the ice maker sits on the left-hand side of the refrigerator compartment ceiling, not in the freezer. Ice complaints on those units are handled in the fresh-food section, where door openings and a warm refrigerator affect production directly.

Parts

Mechanical parts are generally easy to get because the platform is shared. Which ice-maker layout and control board a unit takes is settled by its full model number, not by its appearance.

Repair or replace

Worth repairing in most cases: ice maker, defrost, fan and control work on a Maytag is ordinary. When the compressor or refrigerant circuit fails on an older, basic unit, replacing it usually wins.

Questions about
Maytag refrigerators.

My Maytag is making a rapid clicking noise. Is something wrong?
On Maytag models with a dual evaporator, rapid repetitive clicking is the valve switching cooling between the refrigerator and the freezer, and Maytag calls it normal. Grinding, rattling or a clicking that comes with warming is different, and worth a visit.
Everything in my Maytag got colder for a day. Why?
Most likely PowerCold. It pushes both compartments to their coldest settings and stays on for 24 hours unless you turn it off; adjusting the refrigerator setting also cancels it.
My Maytag shows 'Showroom' and is not cooling. Is it broken?
No. Showroom mode is meant for a store floor: lights and controls work but the refrigerator does not cool. The owner's manual gives the button combination to exit it for your control style.
How often should a Maytag condenser be cleaned?
Maytag says there is no need for routine cleaning in a normal home, but every 2 to 3 months if the kitchen is greasy or dusty or there are pets. The condenser is reached behind the base grille.
