What Manhattan Beach does
to a refrigerator.

Many of its houses are three stories on a walk street or an alley, with the main living floor and the kitchen upstairs for the view.

Alleys rather than streets serve the back of many lots, and several blocks are walk streets with no vehicle access at all.

The city is on the open ocean, so salt air and wind-driven sand are constant and the marine layer keeps the humidity up.

On the water

Metal fixtures and hinges near the coast corrode faster regardless of whether the appliance itself is outdoors, and a door that has started to sag on its hinges is often a corrosion problem wearing a cooling complaint's symptoms.

Small kitchens

Where the kitchen was laid out before anyone imagined a 36-inch appliance, the refrigerator is counter-depth, undercounter or a narrow column — and once it is in, there is no air behind it. Front-vented installations in tight cabinet runs are the normal condition, so a unit running constantly is far more often a ventilation problem than a failing compressor.

Outdoor kitchens

An outdoor refrigerator or an undercounter beverage center is working far outside what an indoor unit is built for: ambient heat, humidity and weather all at once. Whether the appliance is actually rated for it is the first question, and it settles a surprising share of these calls.
