Sub-Zero refrigerators,
specifically.

Sub-Zero builds refrigeration and almost nothing else, and it builds it to be installed into cabinetry rather than stood in a gap. That shapes every service call: the units are reached from the front through a top grille, they are specified with the kitchen, and replacing one is a cabinetry decision rather than an appliance decision.

The Sub-Zero lineup

What is particular
to Sub-Zero.

The range divides into built-in units, columns, undercounter refrigeration and wine storage. Which family a unit belongs to matters more than its age when planning a visit, because the access is completely different.

Two sealed systems, not one

Most Sub-Zero built-in models refrigerate and freeze with separate compressors and separate evaporators. A warm refrigerator beside a perfectly cold freezer is therefore not the airflow problem it would be on a single-system appliance — the two halves genuinely are independent, and the working side is useful evidence.

Air filtration and the condenser

These units breathe entirely through the grille above the doors. A grille that has matted over produces a unit running continuously and drifting warm, and it is the single most common avoidable call on the brand.

Heavy panel-ready doors

A full-height door carrying a custom cabinet panel puts real load on its hinge and closer. Doors that no longer pull the last inch are common, and they present as frost or as a warm compartment rather than as a door complaint.

Dual evaporator means dual defrost

With two evaporators there are two defrost systems, and a failure in one affects only its own compartment. That again narrows the search rather than widening it.

Parts

Parts for current and recent families are generally available, and older built-in units are supported far longer than freestanding appliances from mass-market brands. Panels and trim are the long-lead items rather than the mechanical parts.

Repair or replace

Rarely a close call. A Sub-Zero built-in is priced and installed like cabinetry, so even sealed-system work is normally the cheaper answer by a wide margin.

Questions about
Sub-Zero refrigerators.

My Sub-Zero refrigerator is warm but the freezer is fine. Is that an airflow problem?
On most built-in Sub-Zero models, no. These units use two separate sealed systems, so each compartment cools independently. A warm refrigerator beside a cold freezer points at that one system rather than at a shared fan or duct, which is the opposite of what the same symptom means on most other brands.
Does the unit have to come out of the cabinet?
Usually not. The design puts the condenser, compressor and controls behind the grille above the doors so they can be reached with the unit in place.
How often should the condenser be cleaned?
More often than most owners expect, because the grille is the unit's only air path. A grille that has matted over is behind a large share of the calls about units running constantly or drifting warm.
