Book a visit

Three short steps, about a minute.

or call (844) 681-4650

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Sub-Zero's own guidance for EC40 on its refrigerators. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Read the freezer temperature first. How far it sits above your setting decides what comes next.

02

If it is less than 10 degrees above the setting, clean the condenser, then press and hold the door alarm key for 15 seconds to clear the code.

03

If it is more than 10 degrees above and no door was left open, leave the code on the display and book a service visit; the technician needs to see it.

04

On a 700 Series, check that a custom toe kick or cabinetry has not closed off the kickplate grille.

Still there?

It usually turns into diagnostic visit. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

Do not keep clearing the code while the freezer is warm or still warming. Sub-Zero says to clear it only when temperatures are near normal.

Every code on this site is taken from the manufacturer's documentation, never from a forum or a parts listing. 600, 648PRO and 700 Series panels that show EC with a flashing service light; IC-27 integrated columns have their own page for the same code.

Questions
about EC40.

Can I clear EC40 myself?
Read the freezer temperature first. How far it sits above your setting decides what comes next. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Should I clear Sub-Zero EC40 right away?
Only if the freezer is within 10 degrees of its setting and you have cleaned the condenser. If it sits further above the setting with no open door to blame, leave EC40 showing so the technician can read it. Clearing it while the freezer is still warm throws that evidence away.
What part usually turns out to be behind EC40 on a Sub-Zero?
Sub-Zero does not name a single part. The long compressor run it reports can come from a door left ajar, the sealed system, a fan or a temperature sensor. On a 700 Series, a toe kick that blocks the kickplate grille is worth ruling out before anyone opens the unit.
