What it
usually means.

Condensation is humid air meeting a cold surface, so it is a question about how much humid air is getting in rather than about the cooling system. A door opened often, a door not sealing, a hot and humid room, and warm food put straight in all produce it. On a wine cabinet with a glass door it appears far sooner than it would on a solid door, and often means nothing is wrong at all.

Answer these first

01

Is it on the walls, on the shelves, or on the inside of a glass door?

02

How humid is the room, and has the weather changed?

03

How often is the door opened, and does it always close fully?

04

Has warm food been put in uncovered or while still hot?

05

Is the appliance also frosting anywhere?

Condensation inside refrigerator: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Cover liquids and let hot food cool before it goes in.

02

Check the gasket with the paper test.

03

Note whether the weather or the room humidity has changed.

Also worth checking

  • Check the door is not being held ajar by a bin or a bottle.
  • Note whether there is frost as well as condensation.

How soon does it need a visit?

Not urgent. It becomes worth a visit when it persists in a dry room or comes with frost.

5 things condensation inside the refrigerator turns out to be, from humid room or season to gasket no longer sealing.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

    Humid room or season

Often the whole explanation, and it disappears when the weather does.

  2. 02 no repair

Door left ajar or opened frequently

Every opening admits a cabinet's worth of room air, which then gives up its moisture on the cold surfaces.

  3. 03 no repair

    Warm or uncovered food

Uncovered liquids and hot dishes put a surprising amount of water into the air inside the cabinet.

  4. 04 no repair

Glass door on a wine cabinet

A glass door is a far poorer insulator than a solid one, and fogging is expected in a humid room rather than a problem.

  5. 05 low

    Gasket no longer sealing

A continuous small inflow produces continuous condensation.

Questions about
condensation inside the refrigerator.

How is condensation different from a leak?
Condensation forms as beads spread across walls and shelves, and it comes and goes with the weather and with door openings. A leak collects in one place, usually under the crisper drawers, and returns after it is wiped. If the water is always in the same spot, the page on water collecting inside is the better guide.
Will a colder setting stop it?
No. A colder surface condenses more moisture, not less. Keep the setting where the food needs it and cut the humidity going in instead: cover dishes, cool leftovers first and keep openings short.
Can the moisture harm the food?
Mostly it shortens the life of produce and encourages mold on soft fruit. Keep produce in the crisper drawers and wipe the shelves when beads form, and it does not become a food-safety problem.
Why is the outside of the door sweating?
Many models run a small heater around the door opening to keep that surface above the dew point, and some have an energy-saving setting that turns it off, so check that first. If the outside sweats in a room that is not humid, the heater or its switch may have failed, or the door is not closing fully.
