What it
usually means.

An interior light that has failed is usually a lamp or a door switch and nothing more. It matters for one reason: the light is the quickest way for anyone to tell whether the appliance is receiving power at all, so a dead light alongside a warm compartment is a different conversation from a dead light on an appliance that is cooling perfectly.

The 4 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Is the appliance still cooling normally?

02

Does the display or control panel still work?

03

Is the light dead in one compartment or in both?

04

Is it an LED strip or a replaceable bulb?

05

Does the light flicker, or is it completely out?

Check these
before you book.

Refrigerator light not working: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Check whether the appliance is still cooling.

02

Press the door switch by hand and see whether the light responds.

03

Check whether the bulb is a replaceable type before ordering anything.

Also worth checking

  • Note whether both compartments are affected.
  • Check the control panel still responds.

How soon does it need a visit?

Not urgent on its own. A dead light together with a warm compartment should be treated as a power failure.

4 things refrigerator light not working turns out to be, from bulb failed to no power to the appliance.

The cost guide
  1. 01 lowest

    Bulb failed

On older models this is a user-replaceable part.

  2. 02 low

    Door switch

The switch that tells the appliance the door is open. When it sticks the light stays off, and on some models the fans behave as if the door were open too.

  3. 03 low to moderate

    LED module or its driver

LED lighting is a sealed module on most modern units and is replaced rather than re-lamped.

  4. 04 varies

    No power to the appliance

A dead light on an appliance that is also not cooling is a power question rather than a lighting one.

Questions about
refrigerator light not working.

Can I use any bulb from the hardware store?
Only the type the manual specifies. Appliance bulbs are made for the cold and for an enclosed housing, and an ordinary bulb of the wrong wattage can overheat the lens or the socket. On LED models there is no bulb to change at all.
How can I tell if the light stays on with the door closed?
Press the door switch by hand while looking through the gap: the light should go out. A lens that is hot to the touch, or a top shelf warmer than the rest, also suggests the light is staying on, and on an incandescent model that adds heat to the cabinet.
Why does the light flicker?
A loose bulb, a worn socket or a door switch making intermittent contact are the usual answers, and on LED models the driver. If the flicker comes with the display resetting or the compressor stopping, the problem is the supply to the appliance rather than the light.
Is it safe to change the bulb myself?
Yes on models with a replaceable bulb, but unplug the refrigerator first and let a hot bulb cool. If the cover resists, check the manual rather than prying, because the clips break easily.
