Maintenance and prevention,
guide by guide.

These guides are for owners whose refrigerator is working and who would like it to stay that way. Three jobs prevent most of the avoidable calls we are booked for: keeping air moving across the condenser, keeping the door gaskets clean and sealing, and keeping the defrost drain open so meltwater leaves the cabinet instead of freezing in it.

The condenser, the grille, and the one job that prevents the most calls

On a built-in the grille above the doors is the whole air supply, and it is the most common avoidable problem we see.

Door seals, checked twice a year

A gap of a few millimeters is the upstream cause of frost, constant running and a compartment that has drifted warm.

An open freezer compartment with the rear panel removed, a small turkey baster resting beside the drain opening at the bottom.

Keeping the defrost drain clear before it floods

The sheet of ice under the bottom drawer is the warning. The water on the kitchen floor is what comes next.

is not enough.

Questions about
maintenance and prevention.

How much time does all of this take in a year?
Roughly two hours in total for most households: two short gasket sessions, one or two condenser cleans and a quick look at the drain.
Is maintenance different on a built-in?
The jobs are the same, but the condenser sits behind the grille above the doors and matters more, because that grille is the only air path the appliance has.
Can maintenance extend the life of an older refrigerator?
It removes the extra running hours that wear out a compressor and fan motors early. It cannot undo wear that has already happened, but it slows what comes next.
