--- title: "Refrigerator Column Repair | RefrigeratorRepair.center" description: "Separate refrigerator and freezer towers, each with its own sealed system — so a failure stays on one side." url: "https://refrigeratorrepair.center/types/column-refrigerator-repair/" --- # Refrigerator Column Repair Separate refrigerator and freezer towers, each with its own sealed system — so a failure stays on one side. ## Is yours a column? A column is a single-temperature tower: all refrigerator, or all freezer, usually 18, 24, 30 or 36 inches wide, installed side by side to make a pair. Each column carries its own compressor, its own evaporator and its own controls. That independence is the whole point of the design, and it is also what makes diagnosis different — a failure on one column tells you almost nothing about the other. What fails on a refrigerator column How to tell 01 Two full-height doors that are not a matched pair of fridge and freezer, but two separate appliances set together. 02 Each side has its own control panel and its own temperature setting. 03 One side can fail completely while the other stays perfectly cold. 04 There are two grilles and two sets of documentation, often with two different model numbers. On a refrigerator column: one column fails, the other is fine, freezer columns and their ice makers, condenser fans, matching doors and panels. The problems it shows ### One column fails, the other is fine Because the sealed systems are separate, a warm refrigerator column next to a working freezer column is not a shared airflow problem. It is a failure on that column, and the working side is useful evidence rather than a distraction. ### Freezer columns and their ice makers All-freezer columns very often carry the household ice maker, so a no-ice call on a column pair is a freezer-column call. ### Condenser fans Two towers in one cabinet run means two condensers pulling air through two grilles in a confined space. Restricted airflow shows up as a unit that runs continuously without reaching its set point. ### Matching doors and panels Columns are usually panel-ready, and a pair has to look like one appliance. Hinge and closer work is measured against the neighboring door, not just against the frame. ## Getting at it, and whether to. Each column is serviced on its own, and the working one is a control when narrowing down a failure. [What repairs cost](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/cost/) On the visit 1. The pair shares a cabinet opening, so getting at one may mean protecting the panel of the other. 2. Two appliances means two model numbers. Have both when calling, not just the one that is misbehaving. 3. Panel weight is significant on a full-height door, and hinge adjustment is part of the repair. Repair or replace A column pair is one of the most expensive refrigeration installations in a home, and the two halves are matched in appearance. Replacing one column means either accepting a mismatch or replacing both, which pushes the balance strongly toward repair. Book a visit for a refrigerator column ## The problems it shows. No. Each column has its own sealed system and its own controls. A failure on one side is contained to that side, which is why a column pair is often easier to diagnose than a single cabinet. ### Do I need both model numbers? Yes. A pair is two appliances with two model numbers, and parts are ordered against the column that failed rather than against the pair. ### Why is my column pair running all the time? Two condensers share one cabinet run and breathe through grilles that sit close together. When those grilles are restricted, both units work harder and neither reaches its set point. ### Can one column be replaced and the other kept? It can, and it is sometimes sensible when the failed column is much older than its partner. The catch is the match: a new model may not line up with the old one in height, trim or panel, so check that before deciding. Repairing keeps the pair exactly as it was installed. ### Does the technician need access to both columns? Usually only to the one that failed, though the working column is often glanced at as a reference for what normal looks like in that kitchen. Where the two share a trim kit or a filler strip, a little of it may come off to reach the failed side. --- **[Read on the site: Refrigerator Column Repair | RefrigeratorRepair.center](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/types/column-refrigerator-repair/)** **[Book a visit with RefrigeratorRepair.center](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/schedule/)**
