Start with what you own

# Refrigerator types, told apart.

One word covers several quite different appliances. A built-in is serviced from the front without leaving its opening; a column is a pair of appliances that fail independently; an undercounter unit breathes through one grille. Knowing which you own answers half the question before anyone arrives.

## Five types, each its own job.

Each one is built, reached and repaired differently. Open yours for what fails on it and what the work involves.

### Built-in refrigerator

Flush with the cabinets, serviced from the front, and almost always repaired rather than replaced.

### Refrigerator column

Separate refrigerator and freezer towers, each with its own sealed system — so a failure stays on one side.

### French door refrigerator

Two fresh-food doors over a freezer drawer — the most common premium layout, and the one with the most to go wrong at the door line.

### Side-by-side refrigerator

Full-height freezer beside full-height fresh food, with the ice maker and dispenser built into the freezer door.

### Undercounter refrigerator

A single 15 to 24 inch unit under the worktop — front-vented, tightly enclosed, and easily starved of air.

Not sure which you have?

### Start from what it is doing

If the refrigerator in your kitchen does not obviously match one of these, work from the symptom instead. It reaches the same answer from the other end.

## Which one is yours?

One look at the refrigerator usually settles it. The first sign of each type is on the right; its page has the rest, and what that type means for a repair.

### Built-in Built-in refrigerator

The doors line up with the cabinet fronts instead of standing proud of them.

### Column Refrigerator column

Two full-height doors that are not a matched pair of fridge and freezer, but two separate appliances set together.

### French door French door refrigerator

Two doors side by side at the top, opening outward from the middle.

### Side-by-side Side-by-side refrigerator

Two tall narrow doors, freezer on one side and fresh food on the other, both from top to bottom.

### Undercounter Undercounter refrigerator

It sits under the worktop, in the cabinet run, rather than standing on its own.

## What a repair usually costs.

A useful rule: weigh the repair against what the appliance would cost to replace in the same opening. On a freestanding unit that is a straightforward comparison. On a built-in or a column it is not, because the replacement has to match the cabinetry, and that is why sealed-system work on those types is still normally worth doing.

[Diagnostic visit](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/services/diagnostic-visit/): We do not quote a price before a technician has seen the appliance.

| Repair | Relative cost | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Door gasket or alignment](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/services/door-gasket-and-alignment/) | lowest | Often the cheapest job on the list, and frequently the real cause of a much more expensive-sounding symptom. |
| [Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/services/defrost-system-repair/) | low | The usual answer when frost has built up and the fresh-food side has drifted warm. |
| [Evaporator or condenser fan](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/services/fan-and-airflow-repair/) | low | Common, quick, and the reason a freezer can be cold while the refrigerator is not. |
| [Water inlet valve or line](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/services/water-and-dispenser-repair/) | low | Covers most no-water and no-ice calls once the filter and the shut-off have been ruled out. |
| [Defrost drain clearing](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/services/drain-and-leak-repair/) | low | The sheet of ice under the bottom drawer, before it becomes water on the kitchen floor. |
| [Ice maker assembly](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/services/ice-maker-repair-service/) | moderate | Replaced as a module rather than rebuilt on nearly every current design. |
| [Control board](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/services/controls-and-sensors/) | moderate | Priced against the model, and on built-in units the part is the majority of the cost. |
| [Compressor or sealed system](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/services/sealed-system-and-compressor/) | highest | The one repair where the decision is genuinely open, and where the type of appliance decides it. |
| [Maintenance visit](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/services/maintenance-and-condenser-cleaning/) | lowest | Not a repair. The visit that prevents the largest share of the ones above it. |

For the heart of your home.

## Questions about the types.

### I am not sure which type I have.

Look at where the vent is and whether the door fronts line up with the cabinetry. Flush fronts with a vent strip over the doors mean a built-in; visible coils behind and doors that stand forward of the counters mean a freestanding unit, whatever its door layout. Each type page lists the signs, and the model number settles it.

### Why does the type matter more than the make?

Because the type decides how the appliance breathes, where its parts are reached from and what a replacement would involve. Two brands of French door refrigerator fail in much the same places; a built-in and a freestanding model from one brand do not.

### Does the type change what a repair costs?

Often more than the part does. Work carried out with the appliance in its opening, with panels and trim removed and refitted, runs longer than the same job on a unit that rolls out. The type is also what tips the repair-or-replace decision one way or the other.

### What should I tell you about the installation when I book?

Whether it is fitted into the cabinets or freestanding, whether it wears a custom panel, and whether it has a water line. Those three details decide how long the visit runs and what the technician brings.
