The first is usually a damper stuck open; the second is a sensor. Where in the compartment things freeze is the quickest way to tell them apart — freezing only near the vent is a distribution problem, freezing everywhere is a control problem. The FDA recommends keeping the refrigerator at or below 40°F, and most owners set it a few degrees lower for a margin. Settings close to 32°F start to freeze produce with a high water content, such as lettuce and cucumbers. ### It started freezing food after a power outage. Why? Some models return to their default settings after a power interruption, and the default can be colder than what you had chosen. Check the setting first; a control that keeps reverting on its own is worth mentioning when you book. ### Is food that froze in the fridge still safe? Freezing does not make food unsafe; it damages texture. Lettuce, herbs and soft fruit turn limp once they thaw, while most meats, cheeses and cooked dishes come through fine. ### Does this get worse in cold weather? It can. A refrigerator in a garage or an unheated room runs less often, and on some designs the fresh-food side then drifts colder.
