An ice maker needs three things: a freezer cold enough, water arriving, and a signal that the bin has room. A cold freezer settles the first immediately, which is why the useful question is almost always about the other two. Most no-ice calls end at a shut-off valve, a frozen fill tube, an inlet valve or a bin arm that has been knocked out of position. The 6 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 Is the freezer itself properly cold? 02 Is the bin arm down, or is the sensor window clear of frost? 03 Does the dispenser give water, even if it gives no ice? 04 Is there a small plug of ice visible in the fill tube at the back of the mold? 05 When did it last make ice, and has the water filter been changed since? ## Check these before you book. Ice maker not making ice: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Check the bin arm is down and the sensor window is clear. 02 Try the water dispenser; whether it works splits the diagnosis in half. 03 Confirm the water shut-off behind or under the unit is open. ### Also worth checking - Note when the filter was last changed. - Empty the bin and check no cubes have fused into a single block. ### How soon does it need a visit? No urgency. This is a convenience issue and the appliance is otherwise doing its job. ## The causes, cheapest first. 6 things ice maker not making ice turns out to be, from water shut-off closed to ice maker module. [The cost guide](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/cost/) 1. 01 no repair ### Water shut-off closed Worth ruling out first, particularly after any plumbing work in the house. No repair: check it yourself 2. 02 lowest ### Bin arm or level sensor An arm knocked into its off position, or a sensor obscured by frost, tells the machine the bin is full. It then works exactly as designed and makes nothing. [Fixed by ice maker repair](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/services/ice-maker-repair-service/) 3. 03 lowest ### Restricted water filter A filter past its life reduces flow enough to produce small or hollow cubes before it stops ice altogether. [Fixed by water lines and dispenser](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/services/water-and-dispenser-repair/) [See refrigerator water dispenser not working](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/problems/water-dispenser-not-working/) 4. 04 low ### Frozen fill tube Water that freezes in the tube before reaching the mold blocks every subsequent fill. It usually points back at a fill valve that is dribbling rather than shutting cleanly. [Fixed by ice maker repair](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/services/ice-maker-repair-service/) 5. 05 low to moderate ### Water inlet valve If the dispenser gives no water either, the valve is the common point and the whole supply side is implicated. [Fixed by water lines and dispenser](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/services/water-and-dispenser-repair/) 6. 06 moderate ### Ice maker module When water arrives and the freezer is cold, the module itself is the remaining answer, and it is replaced as a unit rather than rebuilt. Why? A new filter traps air in the line, and on many designs a filter that is not fully locked closes the water path completely. Reseat it, then run the dispenser for a few minutes to purge the air. On a model with no dispenser, give the ice maker a full day before judging it. ### The ice clumps together and tastes stale. Is the ice maker failing? No, that is storage rather than production. Cubes that sit for weeks absorb freezer odors and fuse where they touch, especially when the door is opened often. Empty and wash the bin, and if you use little ice, switch the ice maker off between uses. ### Can the ice maker stay on with the water turned off? Switch it off instead. With no supply the inlet valve keeps trying to fill against nothing, which wears it and can leave the machine stuck mid-cycle. Most models have a switch or a panel setting for exactly this. ### Is an ice maker worth fixing on an older refrigerator? Usually, because the module is swapped as a unit and its cost does not depend on the age of the refrigerator. The picture changes only if the freezer itself is struggling; then the missing ice is a symptom, and the cooling is what needs diagnosing first. --- **[Read on the site: Ice Maker Not Making Ice: Causes and Fixes](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/problems/ice-maker-not-making-ice/)** **[Book a visit with RefrigeratorRepair.center](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/schedule/)**
