Frost is water that arrived as humid air and never left. On an automatic-defrost appliance it should be cleared several times a day, so visible frost means either that the defrost cycle is not completing or that far more humid air is getting in than the cycle was designed to handle. Where the frost sits tells you which of the two it is. The 4 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 Where exactly is the frost: the back panel, the door seal, the ceiling, or everywhere? 02 Is it a hard clear sheet or a soft white fur? 03 Does the appliance defrost automatically, or is it a manual model? 04 Has the humidity in the room risen, or the door been opened more than usual? 05 Is the fresh-food compartment warmer than it used to be? ## Check these before you book. Not urgent on its own, but frost over the evaporator ends as a cooling failure. Not quite. Ice crystals inside packages, usually called freezer burn, come from moisture leaving the food, and they grow faster when the temperature swings or the door is opened often. Heavy crystals on every package together with frost on the walls do point back at humid air getting in. ### Does a frosted freezer use more electricity? Yes. Frost insulates the coil, so the compressor has to run longer to move the same heat. It is one reason frost and constant running so often arrive together. ### How fast does the frost come back after a manual defrost? If the defrost system has stopped working, a thoroughly melted freezer usually frosts over again within days to a couple of weeks, depending on how often the door is opened. If it stays clear for months, the original frost was more likely a door left ajar than a failed part. ### Why is the frost only at the front of the freezer drawer? A drawer that is overfilled or slightly off its rails does not close fully, and the humid air it lets in freezes nearest the gap.
