Treat the fresh-food compartment as unrefrigerated, and use the freezer, which is still working, for anything that can take it. ## What it usually means. When the freezer holds its temperature and the fresh-food compartment does not, the appliance is still making cold and has stopped delivering it. That rules out the sealed system almost entirely. On nearly every design one evaporator serves both compartments, and the upper section is fed by a fan through a duct, sometimes metered by a damper — so the failure lies in that delivery path. The 5 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 Can you hear a fan inside the freezer when the door has been shut for a while? 02 Is there frost covering the back panel inside the freezer? 03 Is there any air movement at the vent inside the fresh-food compartment? 04 Has the freezer become noticeably colder than usual, or noisier? 05 Did the change follow a period when a door was left open, or a very full load? ## Check these before you book. It rarely helps. A colder freezer setting makes the freezer colder and does nothing for the delivery path that has stopped. Leave both settings as they were and write them down, so the technician sees the problem as it really is. ### Why does it recover for a few days after I unplug it? Unplugging it for a day works as a manual defrost: the ice over the coil melts, air can pass again, and the fresh-food side cools. When it drifts warm again a few days later, that strongly suggests the defrost system is not clearing the coil on its own. Tell the technician the trick worked; it shortens the diagnosis. ### Is this more common on side-by-side or French door models? Side-by-side and some built-in layouts meter the fresh-food air through a damper, which adds one more part that can stick. Bottom-freezer and French door models usually feed the upper section through a single duct, so a fan or ice on the coil is the likelier answer there. The symptom looks the same on every layout. ### How long does this repair usually take? Usually one visit. A fan or damper is replaced once the back panel is off, but a heavily iced coil has to be melted clear before anything can be tested, and that adds time.
