Start with the symptom

# Refrigerator problems, symptom first.

Every symptom we are called out for, traced to the causes that actually explain it — cheapest first. Start from what you are seeing rather than from what you think is broken.

## Needs a visit now

A refrigerator that is not holding its temperature puts the food at risk, so these come first — with the causes each one usually turns out to be, cheapest first.

### [Refrigerator Not Cooling](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/problems/refrigerator-not-cooling/)

The compartment is warm but the appliance still has power and still makes noise.

Causes, cheapest first

1. Blocked condenser or grille *lowest*
2. Evaporator fan not running *low*
3. Defrost system failure *low to moderate*

### [Fresh Food Section Warm, Freezer Cold](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/problems/fresh-food-warm-freezer-cold/)

Causes, cheapest first

1. Evaporator fan failed *low*
2. Frost blocking the evaporator *low to moderate*
3. Damper stuck closed *low to moderate*

### [Freezer Not Freezing](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/problems/freezer-not-freezing/)

Soft ice cream and refreezing frost, or a cabinet that has gone entirely warm.

Causes, cheapest first

1. Door or lid not sealing *lowest*
2. Manual defrost overdue *no repair*
3. Ambient temperature below the set point *no repair*

### [Refrigerator Not Turning On](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/problems/refrigerator-not-turning-on/)

No light, no sound, no display — and the first questions are about the supply, not the appliance.

Causes, cheapest first

1. Breaker, GFCI or outlet *no repair*
2. Damaged or unseated power cord *lowest*
3. Control board *moderate*

## Everything else we are called out for

The food is not at risk with these, so they can usually wait for a scheduled visit. Each page says what to check yourself first.

### Refrigerator Leaking Water on the Floor

Where the water appears matters more than how much of it there is.

5 causes

### Ice Maker Not Making Ice

When the freezer is cold, the question is whether water is arriving — not whether the appliance can freeze.

6 causes

### Refrigerator Water Dispenser Not Working

No water, slow water, or water that tastes wrong — three different problems sharing one button.

5 causes

### Refrigerator Running Constantly

The compressor never cycles off, and the cabinet may still be holding temperature.

5 causes

### Frost Building Up in the Refrigerator

Ice on the back wall, around the door, or over the whole freezer — and each location means something different.

4 causes

### Refrigerator Door Not Sealing

A gap of a few millimeters is enough to frost an evaporator and run a compressor continuously.

5 causes

### Refrigerator Making a Loud Noise

Buzzing, clicking, rattling or knocking — the kind of noise narrows it more than the volume does.

5 causes

### Refrigerator Control Panel Not Responding

Buttons do nothing, the display is blank or frozen, or settings will not hold.

5 causes

### Refrigerator Freezing Food

Lettuce frozen solid and milk with ice in it, in a compartment that is not supposed to freeze.

5 causes

### Water Collecting Inside the Refrigerator

Water under the crisper drawers, or a sheet of ice in the bottom of the freezer.

4 causes

### Condensation Inside the Refrigerator

Beads on the walls and shelves, or fog on the inside of a glass door.

5 causes

### Bad Smell in the Refrigerator

A smell that survives cleaning usually has a physical source you have not reached yet.

5 causes

### Refrigerator Light Not Working

A small problem, except when it is the first sign of something larger.

4 causes

### Refrigerator Showing an Error Code

A code narrows the search, but only the manufacturer's own table gives it meaning.

5 causes

## Not every refrigerator breaks the same way.

A built-in is serviced from the front, a column is two appliances, and a chest freezer in a cold garage may not be broken at all. Find yours.

[All refrigerator types](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/types/)

### Built-in refrigerator

Flush with the cabinets, serviced from the front, and almost always repaired rather than replaced.

### Refrigerator column

Separate refrigerator and freezer towers, each with its own sealed system — so a failure stays on one side.

### French door refrigerator

Two fresh-food doors over a freezer drawer — the most common premium layout, and the one with the most to go wrong at the door line.

### Side-by-side refrigerator

Full-height freezer beside full-height fresh food, with the ice maker and dispenser built into the freezer door.

### Undercounter refrigerator

A single 15 to 24 inch unit under the worktop — front-vented, tightly enclosed, and easily starved of air.

Every kind we service

The archive puts the 5 types against each other: how to tell which you own, what fails on each, and which manufacturers build them.

## The repairs behind the symptoms

Most people arrive knowing what they are seeing, not what is wrong. These are the jobs a visit usually turns out to be.

[All 10 repairs](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/services/)

diagnostic

### Diagnostic visit

The visit that decides what the repair actually is, before any part is ordered.

highest

### Sealed system and compressor

The expensive end of the list, and the one where the type of refrigerator decides whether to do it at all.

low to moderate

### Defrost system repair

The failure behind most slow, gradual losses of cooling — and behind most visible frost.

low

### Fan and airflow repair

Two fans, two completely different failures — one stops the cold arriving, the other stops the heat leaving.

lowest

### Door, gasket and alignment

The cheapest job on the list, and the real cause of a great many expensive-sounding symptoms.

low to moderate

### Ice maker repair

Most no-ice calls end upstream of the ice maker, at a valve, a tube or a bin sensor.

low to moderate

### Water lines and dispenser

One chain from the house shut-off to the paddle, and the problem is always at one link of it.

moderate

### Controls and sensors

A refrigerator cools to what it believes the temperature is, and a sensor reading wrong is obeyed perfectly.

low

### Drains and leaks

Three separate water systems, and a leak belongs to exactly one of them.

lowest

### Maintenance

The one visit that prevents more calls than any other, and the cheapest thing on this list.

For the heart of your home.

## Questions about the problems.

### My problem is not on the list. Can you still help?

Yes. The list covers what owners describe most often, not everything a refrigerator can do wrong. Write down what you see, hear or find on the floor when you book, and the diagnosis starts from there.

### I have two of these problems at once. Which page should I read?

Start with the one that appeared first, because the second is often a consequence of it: a warm cabinet and a frosted back wall are usually one failure rather than two. Each problem page links to the ones it most often travels with.

### Which of these need a visit soon rather than whenever suits?

A cabinet that has stopped cooling, a steady leak of supply water, and an appliance with no power while the breaker is fine. Every problem page states how urgent it is. Noises, condensation and a dead light can usually wait for a booked window.

### Can I go on using it while I wait for the technician?

In most cases, provided the food stays cold enough; keep a thermometer inside and read it rather than guessing. Unplug the appliance instead if you smell burning, see scorching at the plug, or hear it clicking on and off repeatedly without starting.
