# Maintenance and prevention guides.

The handful of jobs that prevent most of the calls on this site, and how often they are actually worth doing.

## Maintenance and prevention, guide by guide.

These guides are for owners whose refrigerator is working and who would like it to stay that way. Three jobs prevent most of the avoidable calls we are booked for: keeping air moving across the condenser, keeping the door gaskets clean and sealing, and keeping the defrost drain open so meltwater leaves the cabinet instead of freezing in it.

### [The condenser, the grille, and the one job that prevents the most calls](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/guides/condenser-cleaning-and-why-it-matters/)

On a built-in the grille above the doors is the whole air supply, and it is the most common avoidable problem we see.

### [Door seals, checked twice a year](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/guides/door-seals-checked-twice-a-year/)

A gap of a few millimeters is the upstream cause of frost, constant running and a compartment that has drifted warm.

### [Keeping the defrost drain clear before it floods](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/guides/keeping-the-defrost-drain-clear/)

The sheet of ice under the bottom drawer is the warning. The water on the kitchen floor is what comes next.

## How not to need us.

Each guide gives a realistic schedule rather than an ideal one, shows where the part is on a built-in, a column, a French door, a side-by-side and an undercounter unit, and walks through the job in a few steps an owner can do in under an hour with household tools.

They also mark the point where maintenance turns into repair. A fan that will not spin, a drain that refreezes within days or a door that has dropped on its hinge is no longer something a brush or a cloth will fix, and knowing that early keeps a small problem small.

### The short answer The condenser, the grille, and the one job that prevents the most calls

Knowing how to clean refrigerator condenser coils comes down to five steps: cut the power, remove the grille (above the doors on most built-ins, at the toe kick on freestanding models), brush along the fins, vacuum the dust, and refit.

### The short answer Door seals, checked twice a year

Refrigerator door seal maintenance means washing every gasket fold with warm water and mild dish soap each spring and fall, then checking by touch for splits, flat spots, creases and sections pulled from the channel.

### The short answer Keeping the defrost drain clear before it floods

Learning how to clear a refrigerator defrost drain takes a turkey baster and warm tap water: move the food, melt the ice around the drain opening at the back of the freezer, then squeeze in warm water until it drains within seconds.

## When reading is not enough.

## Questions about maintenance and prevention.

### How much time does all of this take in a year?

Roughly two hours in total for most households: two short gasket sessions, one or two condenser cleans and a quick look at the drain.

### Is maintenance different on a built-in?

The jobs are the same, but the condenser sits behind the grille above the doors and matters more, because that grille is the only air path the appliance has.

### Can maintenance extend the life of an older refrigerator?

It removes the extra running hours that wear out a compressor and fan motors early. It cannot undo wear that has already happened, but it slows what comes next.

## The other sections.

Split by what you are trying to find out rather than by which part of the appliance it concerns.
