Read first, book second

# Refrigerator guides, read first.

A refrigerator repair guide is only useful if it answers the question you actually have, so these are split by what you are trying to find out — is this worth paying for, what is that noise, what can I check myself — rather than by which part of the appliance it concerns.

## Work out what you are dealing with.

Split by what you are trying to find out rather than by what part of the appliance it concerns.

Reading did not fix it?

### The work itself

Every guide here ends in the same place: what a technician actually does about it, in the order it gets done.

10 kinds of work Cheapest cause first What a visit costs

See what we do

Looking for what a repair costs? That lives on one page rather than in a section, because we do not quote a figure before a technician has seen the appliance — [refrigerator repair cost](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/cost/).

## Not sure where to start?

Most visits start with one of four questions. Each has a guide that answers it before anything is booked, and several end with an answer that costs nothing.

[Or start from the symptom](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/problems/)

### Something is wrong and you do not know what Five observations that narrow a refrigerator problem down before anyone visits

Is the freezer cold, is there frost, is it running, did it drift or drop, and has anything changed about where it stands.

### Before any call or booking Where the model number hides, and why nothing works without it

On a Kenmore the first three digits say who actually built the appliance. On everything else it decides which parts are carried.

### It has stopped and the food is warming What to do with the food when the refrigerator fails

Two hours above 40°F is the FDA's line for perishables; a closed fridge holds about four, and a full, closed freezer about forty-eight.

### You are deciding whether it is worth it Repair or replace: how the type of refrigerator decides it

Not a price question. A built-in is specified with the kitchen, so the same repair is obviously worth doing on one and obviously not on a fifteen-year-old freestanding unit.

## When reading is not enough.

If the checks in a guide did not settle it, a technician picks up from there. The visit, stop by stop.

[What repairs cost](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/cost/)

1. 01 Diagnose
2. 02 Quote before any work
3. 03 Parts
4. 04 Repair and check

## When there is no time to read.

These four put the food at risk. Each page puts the causes in the order worth checking, and says when to stop and book.

## Questions about the guides.

### Are the guides meant to replace a repair visit?

No. They explain what a refrigerator is doing and which checks are safe for an owner, so you can rule out the simple causes and describe the rest accurately. Where a guide reaches wiring, refrigerant or a heavy built-in, it tells you to stop.

### Do the guides apply to my make?

Most are written about the type of refrigerator rather than one brand, because the mechanics are shared. Where a make does something differently the guide says so, and your own owner’s manual takes precedence over any general advice.

### Which guide should I read first?

If something is wrong right now, begin with the problem pages, which are arranged by what you notice. The guides are longer and suit a question you have time for: how a system works, what to check before a visit, or whether an older appliance is worth keeping.

### Where does the information in the guides come from?

Each guide names the sources its specific claims rest on, such as manufacturer documentation or USDA and FDA food safety guidance. Anything that cannot be sourced is written as general repair experience rather than as a rule.
