--- title: "GE refrigerator showing Replace Water Filter" description: "What Replace Water Filter means on GE refrigerators, what to check before booking, and when it is not a failure at all." url: "https://refrigeratorrepair.center/error-codes/ge-replace-water-filter/" --- # GE refrigerator showing Replace Water Filter This is a reminder that the water filter is due, based on time, water use or both depending on the model. ## What Replace Water Filter actually means. This is a reminder that the water filter is due, based on time, water use or both depending on the model. On bottom freezer models that take the RPWFE filter, the message also appears when the filter is the wrong one, is fitted backward or is missing. It says nothing about cooling. GE refrigerator display What to do when Replace Water Filter shows on the refrigerator ### Kind of code Mode, not a failure A setting somebody chose, or an alert it raised on purpose — a showroom mode, a door or power alarm. Nothing has broken and no part is needed. ### Usually leads to No repair On models with a Reset Water Filter pad, hold it firmly for about three seconds after fitting a new filter. ### Shows up as Refrigerator Not Cooling The compartment is warm but the appliance still has power and still makes noise. ### Make GE The widest range in the market, from basic freestanding units to built-in Monogram-adjacent models. ### Source GE Appliances support: Water Filter Indicator Light Will Not Shut Off Wording and reset method differ: pad reset on older panels, automatic RFID detection on bottom freezer models with the RPWFE filter. ## Before you book, in this order. Each step comes from GE's own guidance for Replace Water Filter on its refrigerators. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit. 01 On models with a Reset Water Filter pad, hold it firmly for about three seconds after fitting a new filter. 02 On RPWFE models, check that the filter or bypass plug shows FRONT; if it shows BACK, turn it around and refit it. 03 Check that the filter carries GE's ID chip; GE says a filter without one can trigger this message and stop the dispenser. 04 Make sure either a filter or the bypass plug is installed, since the dispenser needs one of them. ### Cleared? Nothing needed repairing. If the refrigerator does not settle back to temperature, that is a separate problem. ### What not to do It is not a cooling problem and not a control failure. Touch-screen RPWFE models have no manual reset; the message clears when a correct filter is detected. ## What you may notice with it. On models with a Reset Water Filter pad, hold it firmly for about three seconds after fitting a new filter. ### Why does my GE still say Replace Water Filter after a new filter? On RPWFE models the message stays if the filter is backward, missing or lacks GE's ID chip. Check it shows FRONT and carries the chip, then refit it. ### Does Replace Water Filter affect cooling on a GE? No, it is a filter reminder and says nothing about cooling. The dispenser needs either a filter or the bypass plug to work. --- **[Read on the site: GE refrigerator showing Replace Water Filter](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/error-codes/ge-replace-water-filter/)** **[Book a visit with RefrigeratorRepair.center](https://refrigeratorrepair.center/schedule/)**
